ELMHURST - A number of physicians on the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital (EMH) Medical Staff and members of the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital and Healthcare Boards of Trustees were honored recently at the Annual Leadership Awards Dinner, which was held at the Civic Opera House in Chicago. The annual event honors physicians and board members who have displayed exemplary leadership qualities during the past year, and includes the Medical Staff Distinguished Service Award and the Robert E. Soukup Award for Leadership.

The recipient of this year's Medical Staff Distinguished Service Award was Marilyn Evrard, M.D. of Glen Ellyn. Dr. Evrard is an oncologist who has been on staff at EMH since 1984. "Marilyn is a knowledgeable, dedicated and caring physician who believes that treating a patient is not all about the diagnosis. She understands what her patients and their families are going through and tailors her treatment accordingly," said Fred L. Jacobs, M.D., EMH Medical Staff President, who presented her with the award. “Marilyn works tirelessly to ensure her patients receive the best care possible and is truly an invaluable asset to Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare.”

The Robert E. Soukup Award for Leadership was presented to Marilyn Graber of Elmhurst. Marilyn has been an active leader in the community and at Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare (EMHC), serving on the EMHC Board of Trustees and as a member of the EMH Guild for many years. Thirty years ago, she started the Guild’s Annual Reindeer Route Housewalk and has served as the Housewalk chairman ever since. Marilyn is also involved with the EMH Foundation and serves on several committees including the Golf Classic Leadership Committee, the Autumn Affair Planning Committee and the Fall Benefit Dinner Committee. "We at Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare are very fortunate to have a board member with such creativity, energy, and truly a passion for life. In and around Elmhurst, Marilyn’s name is synonymous with giving. She gives her time to many organizations, to her business, to her friends and to her family," noted Leo Fronza, President/CEO of EMHC. “Marilyn always has as smile on her face, and is always the first in line to help out - usually without even being asked."

In addition to these two awards, the evening honored the 2004-2005 officers of the EMH Medical Staff. Past officers include Michael Martirano, M.D., Secretary; Lawrence Barr, M.D., Vice President; and Fred L. Jacobs, M.D., President.

Also recognized were physicians who retired recently from the EMH Medical Staff: E. Eliot Benezra, M.D., retired after 46 years of service; Akram I.A. Kareem, M.D., retired after 34 years of service; and John L. Picchietti, M.D., retired after 44 years of service.

Three other physicians were recognized for their 25 years of service to the EMH's Medical Staff: Fred L. Jacobs, M.D., Emergency Medicine; Manfred W. Raiser, M.D., Gastroenterology/Hepatology; and Gary K. Yong, M.D., Family Practice.
