Elmhurst Memorial offers $99 lung cancer screening
Elmhurst, IL – June 2, 2014) – The Elmhurst Memorial Center for Cancer Care is offering low-dose CT lung cancer screening for smokers/former smokers at a cost of $99.
Studies have shown that early detection from screening can lower the risk of death from lung cancer by 20 percent in people who are at high risk. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among men and women in the U.S. To schedule a screening, which is not covered by insurance, call (331) 221-2172.
The U.S. Preventive Service Task Force recommends annual low-dose CT lung screening for women and men identified as high risk, ages 55-80, who have smoked a pack or more of cigarettes a day for 30 years or more, and who are still smoking or who quit less than 15 years ago.
After the screening, which takes about 15 minutes including prep time, a patient’s Primary Care Physician will be notified of results to determine the best treatment plan. Each patient will receive a letter within two weeks with results and required follow-up.
In the event of a suspicious finding, a patient may be referred by his/her Primary Care Provider to Elmhurst Memorial’s Multidisciplinary Thoracic Clinic, where a team of specialists will review results of the scan and develop an individualized plan of care. A Lung Nurse Navigator coordinates all appointments, tests or procedures, and addresses each patient’s questions and concerns.
In addition, Elmhurst Memorial’s Nurse Navigator will assist lung cancer screening patients in finding and connecting with resources to help them stop smoking.
