Elmhurst Memorial Fifth Hospital in World to Achieve Planetree Distinction
Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare is in very exclusive company with a recent announcement that it is one of only five hospitals in the world to receive Planetree Distinction. This designation, the highest honor presented by Planetree, Inc., recognizes Elmhurst Memorial’s achievement and innovation in the delivery of patient-centered care.
Planetree has a 35-year history of partnering with providers across the continuum of care to transform organizational cultures. It’s about creating culture change and delivering health care that is putting the needs of individuals first.
Before a healthcare organization can achieve Planetree Distinction, it must meet a rigorous set of criteria that patients, family members and healthcare professionals have indicated as elements that matter the most when it comes to their healthcare experience. Those who are able to meet all the criteria have successfully achieved the highest standard in patient-centered care.
“Receiving Planetree Distinction takes more than just having a state-of-the-art facility,” said Mary Lou Mastro, President and CEO of Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare. “Our employees, physicians and volunteers have adopted and hold most valuable the Planetree philosophy of patient-centered care.”
Embracing the Planetree Philosophy
“I had the opportunity to participate in a wedding on our unit,” said Karin Block, registered nurse at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital. “One of our cancer patients showed us the wedding ring he bought his long-time love and asked if he could get married right here in his room. We were more than happy to help.”
Surrounded by a small group of their friends and family, a chaplain from Elmhurst Memorial Hospital performed the ceremony and the nurses on the floor selected the music and found some long-stem roses to create a pretty bouquet for the bride. “The wedding was beautiful and the couple was touched by how we turned a day in the hospital into a special moment they will never forget,” said Block.
“It was our initial goal as an organization to be granted Planetree Designation, which we achieved in September 2012. But achieving Planetree Distinction – the highest level – was our ultimate vision, to be acknowledged as world leaders in patient centered care through our leadership and innovation. I am proud to say we have achieved a vision!” said Joanne Muzzey, Director of Patient Advocacy and Planetree at Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare.
