ELMHURST, Ill. (August 13, 2013) The Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Foundation presented two $5,000 Thomas O. Myers, Jr. and Shirley L. Myers Endowed Scholarships.
Recipients are - Shawn John, 2013 graduate of York Community High School in Elmhurst, IL, and son of Biju and Maya John of Elmhurst, Ill. Shawn will attend Ohio State University and major in Biology. Kyle Scott, 2010 graduate of Bartlett High School, in Bartlett, IL, and son of Chip and Sheri Scott of Carol Stream, IL. Kyle currently attends Purdue University and is pursuing a degree in Biomedical Engineering.
This endowed scholarship was first awarded in 2004 by Mr. and Mrs. Thomas O. Myers, Jr. in appreciation for the high quality and compassionate care provided by the staff of Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare to those living and working in the communities it serves. It is presented each year to two individuals who are the son or daughter of an Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare employee and pursuing a degree in healthcare or medicine.
More than 40 applications were submitted. Winners were chosen based on academic achievement, evidence of leadership, community service, and a written essay describing their decision to pursue a healthcare career.
“We are so appreciative to Tom and Shirley Myers for having set up these two scholarships. The scholarship selection is determined through a blinded process, and each year the judges have the privilege, yet difficult responsibility, of selecting two candidates from a group of very qualified applicants,” said Sandra Nelson, president of the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Foundation. “The Myers have long been involved with Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare and are honored for this opportunity to advance the healthcare careers of children of employees.”
