Admitted After Surgery Instructions

Two weeks before surgery

Stop taking herbal medications. Examples include Gingko Biloba, Ecchinacea and St. John’s Wort.

One week before surgery

Stop taking any Aspirin, Ibuprofen, or Naproxyn products (Tylenol/Acetominophen is OK).

The day before surgery

  • Do not drink any alcohol or use marijuana, etc.
  • If you are ill, contact your surgeon.
  • Call the Ambulatory Surgery Unit at 630-993-5106 between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to confirm your time to come to the Hospital. (If your surgery is on Monday, please call the Saturday before between 9 a.m. and Noon.)
  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight.

The day of surgery

  • DO bathe or shower and brush teeth (without swallowing water). You may use deodorant.
  • DO wear loose, comfortable clothing; it will be placed in a locker during your procedure.
  • DO take your morning medications, if the nurse or your physician instructed you to do so.
  • DO bring reading glasses, if needed, and ontainers for contact lenses or glasses
  • DO bring an ID bracelet, if one was given to you
  • If you pack a bag with other personal items, the bag should be left in the car until after surgery when a permanent room assignment will be made.
  • DO NOT wear any eye make up or jewelry.
  • DO NOT chew gum, take cough drops, or consume hard candy or mints.
  • DO NOT bring any jewelry, valuables or cellular phones.

Two adults can be with you in the room in Ambulatory Surgery, no children under 12.

Before surgery, an anesthesiologist will speak with you.

After surgery, your surgeon will talk to your family member/companion.
