Scope of Services
At Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, everything in our ER is state-of-the-art, including the way that we directly access our patients. To maximize efficiency, our ER is separated into four pods that serve separate purposes, from treating serious injuries to pediatric care. Within each pod is a decentralized nurses' station that provides a direct line of sight to each treatment room. Ninety percent of what our nurses need, to care for you, can be reached within five seconds. The result: Patients can count on amazingly efficient care in an extraordinary environment.
Gone are the traditional curtain-separated bays. Here, you will find 31 private suites with walls, doors and separate entrances for family and staff. Each room even has its own private bathroom. To help you relax in comfort, we've included a 42-inch flat screen TV in every room.
Strong collaboration between the Emergency Department, cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons has resulted in amazing care given to our patients experiencing a cardiac emergency. Elmhurst Hospital's median door-to-balloon time (the time between patient arrival at a hospital and the start of artery-opening treatment) is 60 minutes, well below the national benchmark of 90 minutes.
EMHC works with emergency medical technicians and first responders to provide outstanding care to our patients even before they get to our hospital. Patients arrive within our state-of-the-art ambulance bays, which are heated and fully enclosed, so they are never exposed to the outside elements before entering the Emergency Department.
In order to recognize our amazing first responders (paramedics, firefighters and police) for excellent work in the field, each month, Elmhurst Memorial Hospital awards a special "Run-of-the-Month" commendation to a department whose outstanding partnership and "above and beyond" efforts help our Emergency Department team do what they do.

Minor Illness/Injury Care
Urgent medical problems often occur without warning. In addition to our Emergency Department, our Immediate Care Centers in Addison and Lombard can treat minor illnesses, such as ear infections, sore throats and earaches, and injuries, such as sprains, broken bones and minor burns. Patients requiring medical attention for minor illnesses are often discharged within 60 minutes of being triaged.
We have a special area set aside to expedite treatment and focus on the unique needs of children. Our pediatric inpatient unit is adjacent to the emergency room and caregivers have been cross-trained to staff both areas.
SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner)
Services Specialty care, given by certified forensic nurses to victims of sexual assault, is available 24/7 within the Emergency Department.
Two specialty trauma suites are located in the pod nearest to the ambulance bays. The suites are larger than other treatment rooms and include all the equipment needed to provide care for the critically ill patient, without staff ever having to leave the room.
Within Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, we offer several shopping and dining options, including Starbucks and Walgreens. Starbucks is the perfect spot to have a cup of coffee and relax, and offers merchandise, food and gift cards as well. Our Walgreens pharmacy provides a convenient option for picking up prescriptions before leaving the building. (Prescriptions can then be refilled at any Walgreens location.)
