Developing Your Birthing Plan

Birth plans give you and your partner the chance to discuss and think through all the aspects of your ideal birthing experience — from whom you want with you in the delivery room to the type of music you want playing, if any. It also reveals your thoughts on natural childbirth, enhanced birthing experiences, such as using the services of a doula* during labor, epidurals and C-sections. Share your plan with your obstetrician or midwife before you deliver, so he or she knows your thoughts and can better meet your expectations.

Your Baby. Your Experience.

At Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, we care for you, respect you and honor your birthing choices. We encourage you to share your expectations with us, so we can meet them. We also encourage you to engage your partner and your family in the process, and to create your own unique birthing experience.

Natural Childbirth
The Family Birthing Center at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital has nurses who specialize in providing labor support for women who choose to deliver their babies naturally, with little or no medication or medical intervention.

Enhanced Birthing
If you’d like to bring special music or movies to enhance your birthing experience, just let us know. If you want, you can hire a doula. And after the delivery, you can receive alternative comfort measures for relief and relaxation.

You have the option of receiving an epidural or alternative comfort measures during the birthing process, and will be able to choose from many forms of pain relief during labor. Our goal is to make you as comfortable as possible.

Should you and your physician decide on a C-section, we offer fully equipped cesarean birthing suites to ensure a smooth procedure and optimal recovery for you and your baby.

*A doula is a trained and experienced professional who provides support to the mother before, during and after birth. The support can be physical, emotional or informational.
