American Cancer Society (ACS) Recommendations

20–39 years of age:

  • Monthly breast self-exam
  • Clinical breast exam performed by a health expert every three years
  • Initial mammogram by age 40

40 years and older:

  • Annual mammogram
  • Annual clinical breast exam performed by a health expert

Before initiating breast self-exam, the ACS recommends that you have a nurse or doctor check your method to assure effectiveness. Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare provides a free class teaching breast self-exam called MammaCare®, which trains to you detect a potential abnormality earlier than you thought possible. Report changes found during breast self-exam to your doctor, as well as any of the following symptoms:

  • A lump or thickening of tissue anywhere in the breast
  • Skin dimpling or puckering of the breast
  • Breast pain
  • A nipple that is pushed in (inverted) and hasn’t always been that way
  • Discharge from the breast that comes out by itself and is clear or bloody, staining your clothes or sheets
  • Redness, scaliness or thickening of the nipple
